I live in Redfern now. My grandfather lived in Redfern 78 years ago. He moved to Sydney when he was two from the South of Italy. My grandfather always owned and operated fruit shops. My mum has bittersweet memories of working at his fruit shops after school and on weekends. All my memories of the fruit shops are fond, it was always a fun experience to visit. I never had to work in them.
It was always very important to my mum that I went to university because she remembers my grandfather working with his hands, and being really tired from getting up at the crack of dawn to buy the best produce from the market. Ironically, now I wear a suit to work so I can afford to live in Redfern.
SCENT
Apples, cardboard boxes, purple packing plastic, slight rotting vegetable scent, coffee and dry cleaning.
