I’ve gone to the Moon Festival in Cabramatta every year since I was a little kid. When we were small my mum would get us lanterns and there would be parades where kids were dressed up in traditional dress and take their lanterns onto the stage. I remember this one teal colour dress that had embroidery of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.
The festival smells like frying and grilling. There are smokey, barbeque-y, food truck smells. At the end of the night everyone would try to find the best vantage point to watch the fireworks.
My family offer moon cakes on a plate and we leave it there while the incense burns down. The incense has a strong floral smell. There are different moon cake fillings, some of them have a cured duck egg yolk. I didn’t know it was a duck egg yolk until last year, I always thought it was a chicken yolk. It’s bright orange, the colour of a cheezel.
