My childhood summer smells like frangipani and Coconut Reef Oil on the beach. We used to travel by train from Sydenham to Cronulla every second Sunday. We would take it in turns between the surf side and the shadier and safer side of Gunnamatta. The smell of trains is ozone; and the Greek word for the smell of the ocean is also something like “Ozone.” The smell of just before it storms in the summer and the saltiness of the sea breeze.
